Hurricane Harvey

Harvey Arts Recovery Project

HARP (Harvey Arts Recovery Project) is the partnering of local creative arts therapists, community artists/ musicians, and figures within several non-for- profits, government, and arts organizations throughout the City of Houston to collaborate and aid one another in the recovery and relief of fellow Houstonians in the wake of Harvey.

HARP’s most recent endeavor has been the planning and future implementation of Harvey Healing Days, a series of days that host 90 minute sessions led by Art and Music Therapists and yoga instructors to facilitate positive ways for first responders, evacuees, and others affected to cope and express via music, art making, and movement. The inaugural day is set to take place Saturday, November 4th and will be serving both the adults and children's still displaced from their homes and typical walk of life during this event.

The TMC CAT team will organize four sessions; November 4th, one in the beginning of February, one in April, and one in August for the "anniversary."

Information:

Volunteers must attend at least two sessions: the first session (November 4th) and one of the next 3 sessions

The TMC CAT team will organize four sessions; November 4th, one in the beginning of February, one in April, and one in August for the "anniversary".

    - Art Therapy and other Creative Arts Therapist volunteers will learn how to help facilitate the workshop in the November 4th workshop.  We will then need 3-4 Art Therapists (and 3-4 music therapists, etc) at each of the subsequent workshops to facilitate with help from the TMC CATs.

    - If Art Therapists want to bring this workshop to their own communities, they are more than welcome to, but TMC CAT will only be helping facilitate the 4 I have already mentioned.

Deep in the Art of Texas & 2017 STATA Art Show

Deep in the Art of Texas

Even if you were not able to make it to the reception, you can still enjoy the beautiful art and support Hurricane Harvey by purchasing one of the donated fundraiser paintings. Our image gallery below includes several pieces from the show, some have been donated for fundraising and some are for sale by the artist.

Theme: Connections
"All is connected...no one things can change by itself." - Paul Hawken

This year's theme "Connections" was chosen in early 2017. However, the recent impacts of hurricane Harvey brought a deeper meaning to the art show. Our national organization and art therapists from surrounding states reached out, offering ways to help Texas. To support communities impacted, STATA developed a fundraising campaign called "Deep in the Art of Texas."

Proceeds from this campaign, including the sale of donated art pieces in our annual show, will directly benefit Harvey relief efforts. Potential projects include murals in towns rebuilding, community wellness workshops, and art supplies for schools/shelters. Thank you to the STATA members and our art therapist friends in Louisiana who have donated their art pieces.

To purchase a painting for the fundraiser, email stxarttherapy@gmail.com to express your interest. Be sure to include the title and artist name. Donate art work is indicated in the image description.

Red Cross Volunteer Info

If you are interested in being a mental health volunteer for victims of Hurricane Harvey, here is some info to know from Pat Grajkowski:

Volunteering for the Red Cross can be done online - go to redcross.org and follow the prompts.  A background check is required and that can be completed online as well.

The current licensure requirements for Disaster Mental Health are as follows: LPC, LPC-I, LMFT, LMFT-A, LCSW, LMSW, Psychologist.

All who complete the online requirements should also bring along a copy of their license.  Austin area EBVs should go to the Convention Center and follow the Red Cross signs.

Event Based Volunteers (EBV) are needed in the Austin, San Antonio, and Houston areas - asmany as are willing to help.  Recovery from this disaster is going to take a very long time. If you can give a few days or however long, it will certainly be appreciated. Also, if you know of anyone else who might be willing to volunteer - not necessarily for Disaster Mental Health,  please encourage them to go to redcross.org to sign up. There are many areas where volunteers are needed.

Right now at the Austin Convention Center, preparations are being made to shelter over 7,000 people!  There are additionalshelters opened all over the the impacted and surrounding areas.

WE NEED EVERYONE WHO IS WILLING AND ABLE TO HELP OUR  TRAUMATIZED SISTERS AND BROTHERS-WE ARE ALL CONNECTED!!!
