Pictures from Bead Making Workshop (Austin Den Meeting, October 25th)

Thanks to Deanna Miesch and Deann Acton of Art Therapy Austin for leading a wonderful workshop!

Austin Den Meeting and Bead Workshop: October 25, 2015

Please join us for a fabulous CEU opportunity and workshop on beading! Deann Acton, LMFT, ATR-BC and Deanna Miesch, LPC-S, ATR-BC will be presenting.

Beads have been found dating back nearly 40,000 years and have been made from all sorts of materials such as pebbles, shells, teeth, claws, clay, glass, and more. The word "bead" comes from the Anglo Saxon words "bidden" (to pray) and "bede" (prayer). Historically, beads have been used as a form of money, as jewelry to bring wisdom and fortune, and as both a spiritual aid and a tool for meditation.

In this workshop, participants will:
- Learn about two distinct forms of bead making - paper beads and felted beads
- Become skilled at making these types of beads
- Learn how beads can be used as a meditation and gratitude tool
- Discover how beads can aid in transformation
- Understand how beads can be used in the context of therapy

When: Sunday, Oct. 25, 2015, 3-5pm
Where: Austin Public Library Ruiz Branch, 1800 Grove Blvd, Austin, TX 78741
Free for STATA member, $15 for non-members for supplies and CEU

Summary: Making things can be a powerful part of the play therapy process. Hard, soft, smooth, rough, heavy, or light – materials we can hold in our hands have a special and important meaning in our healing process. For a long time, we have known the importance of touch in development and healing. We learned to our amazement that tiny babies, in spite of being well fed, could fade away and die without touch and stimulation.

But how to offer that experience to our clients in this age of touch-less therapy? Even if you have made peace with appropriate and healing touch as a part of counseling, your client may not be able to accept it. This workshop is about discovering the power of bringing 3D materials into your counseling practice and enriching the play therapy process with easy, creative materials.

Play-Doh process, wood assemblage, wire sculpture, and newspaper & tape constructions are the experiences being offered to you in this mini-summer retreat – simple to use, inexpensive to obtain, and invaluable to restoring hopefulness, confidence, and positive energy to you and your clients. Come and have an awesome Adventure in 3D!
