STATA CEU EVENT May 21st

The Uvalde Love Project: A Community Art Therapy Approach to Communal Trauma presented by Wanda Montemayor, LPC-S-AT, ATR-BC, ATCS, RPT-S

The Uvalde Love Project is a community initiative that began following the devastating event of the Robb Elementary Shooting in Uvalde, Texas. Led by a team of art therapists, this project is aimed at promoting healing and fostering love among its members through a combination of art and therapy workshops. During the workshops, participants have had the opportunity to create hand-made tiles for a mosaic mural that will be displayed at Jardin de los Heroes Park in Uvalde. The completion and installation of this project is set for June of this year. Visit www.uvaldelove.com to learn more about this project and find out ways you can help this effort.

Please join us May 21st from 1-2:30pm for an incredible opportunity to partake in the completion of this mural. Light snacks and beverages will be provided, however, a potluck is always welcome. This event will be free to all active STATA members and $15 for non-members. Payment will be taken in the form of cash or check the day of the event.

CONTEMPLATIVE PHOTOGRAPHY AS SELF-CARE

Camera Lens.jpg

Slow down and engage with the world—using a new lens and a creative means of caring for self: Sunday, June 27, 2021, from 2:00-3:30 p.m. via Zoom!

Dr. Awa Jangha will present an overview of contemplative photography as self-care for art therapists and clients. Self-care is an important component of professional sustainability, especially during the pandemic, when the need for counseling has been at an all-time high. Contemplative photography invites the participant to slow down and engage with the world with a new lens which offers a creative means of caring for oneself. Typically utilized in the realm of spiritual direction, this practice of contemplative photography as self-care parallels the work of art psychotherapy. This presentation will offer participants the opportunity to engage in an experiential of Visio Divina with reflection questions for individual processing.

Dr. Jangha earned her PhD from Loyola University Maryland in Pastoral Counseling, a Counselor Education and Supervision program. Her dissertation research focused on experiences of power in the pastoral counseling identity development of African-American female pastoral counselors in training and utilized art as the means of exploration. She is a Licensed Professional Counselor and a Board-Certified Art Therapist. As a member of both the Association for Spiritual, Ethical, and Religious Values in Counseling and the American Art Therapy Association she infuses creativity into her teaching of spiritually integrated practices within the classes she has taught. Her private practice, Art and Spirit Counseling, in Austin, Texas, offers spiritually integrated counseling, as well as art therapy.

Art and Teletherapy: Practicing Radical Acceptance in the Face of a Pandemic and Utilizing Creativity to Help Our Clients Create Change

STATA.png

The COVID-19 pandemic has created an extremely challenging and anxiety-provoking landscape. In six short months, therapists have had to find ways to shift in-person sessions to virtual practice. For many therapists, this is an entirely new platform for doing therapy. For art therapists, it can be even more daunting as we try to figure out ways to continue to advocate for creativity. This learning process is challenging because it is happening at a time when so many of our clients are experiencing increased stress due to potential feelings of isolation and fear.

In this workshop, we will talk about the positive aspects of doing teletherapy and discuss how we can lean into those advantages. We will also discuss the potential shifts our practices may need to make in order to take care of ourselves. We will discuss technological applications that can assist us in our work—and will also share low-tech solutions for engaging our clients.

Join us August 30th from 2:00-3:30 p.m. for a CEU presentation by Wanda Montemayor, LPC-S/AT and Deann Acton, LMFT, ATR-BC. Free for STATA members or $25 for nonmembers. Click here to register.

Mentalizing in Group Art Therapy: Interventions for Emerging Adults

Mentalizing.jpg

A NEW Art Therapy Book for Adults will be released on December 19, 2019

By creating a therapeutic outlet for processing and self-expression, art therapy is an especially effective way to help emerging adults to develop their mentalizing faculty. With an 8-week syllabus, this professional guide provides detailed directives on putting mentalizing-based arts interventions into clinical practice with those aged 18-30, in a group or individual setting. With a specific focus on the differences in treating this age group, and case examples to demonstrate how art therapy interventions enhance mentalizing, this guide is an ideal resource for all professional art therapists looking to utilize their distinct capabilities and specialized training in a psychiatric hospital setting.

The Mobile Art Program (MAP) provides art classes at 6 of the Housing Authority for the City of Austin (HACA) through a grant called Healthy Connections. By sharing their talents with the community, MAP participants experience a concrete evidence of accomplishment and resulting self-esteem; a deeper understanding of their own past and present experience; and increased social interaction and friendship in a group setting. Learning is a continuous lifelong process that plays a role in keeping mentally active and promoting personal development.

We are looking for art instructors to lead classes once or twice a month in 2020 at various locations throughout the city. The classes are two hours long, typically on a weekday, between 1:pm and 4:pm, depending on the location. We allow up to 12 participants per session however the average class size is 8. The projects should be interesting and age appropriate.

Our pay rate is $45 per hour ($90 per session). Unfortunately we cannot pay for prep time. The classes are provided free of charge to the residents and we supply all of the supplies. In our space at the AGE of Central Texas building we have a large supply of art materials to choose from. If you have a project idea that requires additional supplies, we can order them for you.

If you are interested in teaching a class, please contact Theresa at mobileart@mail.org

Expressive Arts Therapy for Children Experiencing Traumatic Stress CEU

Cathy+Trauma+Training+Eventbrite.png

Trauma affects many of the children in our community. Being able to recognize this trauma and offer effective treatment is an essential aspect of supporting their well-being and mental health. Art therapy and other expressive therapies offer experiential ways for therapists to engage with children, help them understand how their mind and body react to the trauma, support their recovery and wellness, and enhance posttraumatic growth.

This one-day training will focus on the use of trauma-informed, expressive arts-based interventions to help children who have been affected by trauma, integrating an understanding of neurodevelopment, somatic approaches, mindfulness, and positive psychology. A multi-modal approach to trauma treatment is recommended, exploring interventions that utilize the visual arts, music, creative writing, movement, and enactment.

Although the training material will be helpful for all children experiencing traumatic stress, special attention will be focused on working with children experiencing trauma related to immigration, border detention, and family separation. Partner organizations from the community will be available to provide more information about how helping professionals can volunteer to further assist children and families affected by the border crisis.

Participants will learn a variety of practical applications for immediate use in their work through lecture, discussion, brief film presentations, and hands-on experiential activities. Come prepared to engage in individual and group art-based experiences and to learn not only through didactic information, but also through your capacity for creativity, play, and imagination.

All helping professionals working with children and families in immigration detention or experiencing other traumatic stress are welcome.

All art supplies and lunch will be included with registration fee.
